American media publishes Donald Trump's answer to the question: why doesn't the president have a dog? It turns out that for the last 120 years, all US presidents have had dogs in the White House.
But Trump doesn't have a dog, nor does he want one. He personally stated this at a meeting with supporters in El Paso. The very idea of becoming a ‘dog person’ seems false to him, Trump said. His supporters love him without a dog. The president also admitted that he doesn't have time for a pet.
‘Honestly, I have nothing against dogs, but I don't have time. How would I look walking a dog on the White House lawn?’, Trump noted.
The publication notes that Trump may not be attracted to dogs because of germophobia - a fear of germs.
‘Donald was not a fan of dogs,’ Ivana Trump, the US president's first wife, wrote in her 2017 memoir, “Raising Trump”. She said that for a while the family had a poodle named Chappy, but the dog disliked Donald and barked at him all the time.
Journalists also recall that Trump has a long-standing habit of comparing people he considers enemies to dogs, often blaming them for behavior not usually associated with dogs.
There are facts that prove Trump isn't so averse to animals, though. In 2015, he attended one of the popular dog shows in the US. The owner of a beagle, which won the main medal, said that Trump ‘held the dog in his arms the whole time’ and it even left blonde hair on his black suit, but it did not cause any displeasure.
Trump also spoke admiringly of ‘professional dogs’ - German shepherd dogs that serve on the police force and can recognise drugs.
The dogs have lived in the White House with their owners since 1897, when William McKinley was president.
Donald Trump had a chance to get a dog, too. A month after Trump was elected president, a woman named Lois Pope from Florida tried to give him an adorable dog named Patton, a Goldendoodle, explaining her act as follows: ‘Dogs really suit presidents!’. The woman was even able to show a photo of the cute dog to Donald Trump's son Barron, and the latter was very touched - ‘to tears’. But Trump didn't take the dog.
Dogs of US presidents are a separate topic in the history of the country. They have always been associated by voters with a positive image of the ruler. They performed the role of ‘easy advertising’ of the president.
Thus, the dog of Warren Harding, the 29th president of the USA (1921-1923) is known. The dog's name was Ladies Boy. He even had his own special chair at Cabinet meetings. And on his pet's birthdays, Harding threw a party for all the neighborhood dogs with birthday cake and entertainment.
A dog named Millie, a springer spaniel, who lived in the White House during the presidency of George Bush Sr. Millie was the ‘co-author’ of the mega-popular ‘Millie's Book,’ in which the president's wife Barbara Bush describes life in the White House as a ‘dog translator.’ The book once topped the bestseller list.
US President Barack Obama's dogs, named Bo and Sonny, are also famous all over the country. They even had their own schedule for photo opportunities at the White House.
